Deadwood

Deadwood is a charming town located about 14 miles west of Sturgis and we spent the afternoon of Monday, August 8th poking around.  Main Street looks like a movie set depicting the old time wild west (with motorcycles instead of horses).

Deadwood got it's start in the 1870's when gold was discovered in this area of the black hills.  The name Deadwood comes from miners discovering a gulch full of dead trees according to the official Deadwood website.  The town started booming and has a history of gold, gaming and prostitution.

Deadwood is the site where Wild Bill Hickok was shot from behind while playing a game of poker at the Nuttal & Mann's Saloon in 1876 by drifter Jack McCall.  Wild Bill was holding a hand of black aces and black eights when he was killed and that hand has since been known as the "Dead Man's Hand."  Wild Bill was a jack of all trades, including, serving as a Sheriff, Marshall and Constable in Kansas, a stagecoach driver, a skilled gunfighter and Civil War spy for the Union Army.  It was rumored he was romantically involved with Calamity Jane, but historians don't substantiate this claim.  Both Wild Bill and Calamity Jane are buried in the local cemetery.

We checked out the Deadwood Harley dealership and also used it for cover from the daily afternoon rain.  We strolled Main Street and enjoyed local ice cream...I had a flavor called French Silk Pie and it was so delicious. Ice cream is always a highlight!

Deadwood was a fun little town to explore.

Another sea of bikes

The photo below is one of my favorites from Deadwood....no explanation needed, right?

Can you say, "Nice butts?!"

Next on the roster is Mount Rushmore...
